Participate in our very first NFT drop: futurethinkers.org/nft

We're very excited to announce that on June 1 2021 we're dropping our first Smart Village NFT!

If you are not familiar, NFTs stands for Non Fungible Tokens - it's a type of crypto token that is verifiably unique or rare, instead of being interchangeable in the way that dollars or Bitcoins are.

They are a type of crypto token that has become popular with creators for releasing limited edition art or collectibles.

But there is much more to NFTs than art (we actually think they will be revolutionary for creators of all kinds!).

NFTs can represent any other type of unique item - a ticket, an access key, membership, a recognition badge, an IOU for a service, and much more.

We will be releasing several different kinds of NFTs for the Smart Village in the near future.

By purchasing our NFTs, you are directly contributing to bringing the village into reality.

The first NFT we are dropping will be:

  • a limited edition, collectible, evolving art piece and a badge to show to show off your controbution to the first smart village
  • an access key to our private online learning portal, where you will be the first to get access to our village experimenmts and learnings and be able to collaborate on them before we open-source them and release them into the worl
  • for every NFT sold, we will plant 1 tree or another type of plant to regenerate the land at the village and the forest around it

We've been working with the folks from Commons Stack and Longtail Financial to do token engineering and validate our token ecosystem that the NFTs will be part of. This is just the beginning!

In This Episode of Future Thinkers:

  • Why we're releasing an NFT
  • What are NFTs and what can they do?
  • How artists, smart villages, and social good projects can use NFTs to raise funding
  • Our first NFT to plant trees and do regenerative and permaculture work at the village
  • How the NFTs will evolve in the future
  • Ove of our first events: a psychedelic geocache adventure
  • Pre-selling accommodations through NFTs
  • Event and workshop tickets at the village as NFTs
  • Crowdfunding future buildings at the village with NFTs
  • Why we're using Polygon blockchain
  • Setting up your wallet through Metamask

Future Thinkers Smart Village is becoming a reality!

We have found a new, large 400 acre property with the right zoning, infrastructure and everything else we could need to make the village happen. The property has a RV camp with 80 accommodation spots, a private lake, two creeks, large forest, even a golf course, and the closest airport is just a two hour drive from there.

In this episode we want to share with you where we are right now with this project, as well as our plans and visions for how the smart village would look like on this new location.

In This Episode of Future Thinkers:

- Why we are creating the Smart Village and what problems we are solving with it

- How converging technologies can make rural living enjoyable and practical

- The benefits of a regenerative village for health, family and community life

- The opportunity for sustainable, affordable and innovative housing

- Whole systems design and its connection with biomimicry, permaculture and indigenous thinking

- The eight pillars of whole systems design

- The opportunity for experimenting with social organization, business structures, economy and investing

- What kind of mentality it takes to live in a smart village

- The three things that make intentional communities fail

- Why we need a network of regenerative villages all over the world

This is the beginning of our series of interviews with Ken Wilber.

Ken Wilber is the author of over 25 books and the creator of Integral Theory, which has been one of the most influential frameworks for understanding the stages of human development. For that he’s been sometimes called the “Einstein of consciousness studies”.

This is a multi-part interview, and we start by talking about Integral Theory from a historical perspective, and the current stage of societal development. Ken also offers his comments of Jordan Peterson’s interpretation of awakening and Greta Thunberg’s climate activism.

In later parts, we will be talking about the Metamodernism movement, transition to the so-called 2nd tier stages of human development, as well as shadow work and practices that can help us get to the higher stages of development.

The new Joker film with Joaquin Phoenix is an extremely timely and relevant commentary on what is happening in the Western world right now.

From the mass shootings and the epidemic of mental illness to the grief and anger that people are feeling in the climate change protests, the film is symbolic of many patterns emerging in modern society.

In many ways, the film is a warning. We wanted to do a commentary on what can be done about the feelings and patterns of behaviour illustrated in the film, and what we can do about them on an individual and societal level.

In Part 2 of our interview with Nora Bateson, an award-winning filmmaker, writer, educator, and the President of the International Bateson Institute, we continue our discussion on sense-making, on order and chaos, complex systems and cultures, and what we really need for social and cultural change.

Nora comes from a family lineage of complexity thinkers - her father was the systems theorist Gregory Bateson and her grandfather was the biologist William Bateson, who coined the term genetics.

Nora’s book Small Arcs of Larger Circles came out in 2016, and she is currently working on her next book about Warm Data, or the interrelational processes between and among systems.

Her work brings the fields of biology, cognition, art, anthropology, psychology, and information technology together into a study of the patterns in ecology of living systems.

We’ve been diving deep into several projects lately - growing our courses, designing a brand new meditation app, starting the global Future Thinkers meetup initiative, and brainstorming the creation of an in-person retreat center for exploring the ideas and practices we talk about on the podcast and in our courses.

In this episode we discuss our vision for this retreat center, why we want to create it, and what we want to do there. This is still in a very early stage and a work in progress.

We want to share our intention and invite you to collaborate with us on this idea if you feel inspired by it.

Our guest in the following two episodes is Cris Beasley, an author, podcaster, ex AI startup founder and healing practitioner who created the Love Lock card deck to help people explore and work with difficult emotions. We asked Cris some of the questions that we often get from our listeners and course participants: how to access the repressed emotions in the body, what are some of the helpful techniques and tools to do it, and how to integrate these emotions into our lives in a healthy way.

This episode is in two parts. In Part 1 we talk about the most common 4 emotional responses in difficult situations, the transformative power of breath work, and other tools to access difficult emotions.

In Part 2 we will talk about the role of emotional health in society and why it is crucial for gaining self-sovereignty, as well as the current position of mainstream science on energy work and healing practices.

We had a great pleasure to interview John Vervaeke, a lecturer at the University of Toronto in the departments of psychology, cognitive science and Buddhist psychology. John’s excellent lecture series on YouTube called Awakening From the Meaning Crisis has inspired us to invite him on the show and discuss how to overcome the meaning crisis in today’s world.

In this interview we also dive deep into the topics of integrating scientific and traditional views of the search for meaning, multiple kinds of knowing, and the ecology of transformational practices. We draw on various resources from cognitive science, psychology, philosophy, religion and spirituality.

This episode is divided in two parts. In Part 1 we talk about what is the meaning crisis, why it has emerged and what are some of the practices and solutions to deal with it.

In this episode we discuss further on one of our favorite topics - how to gain more sovereignty in modern world, as well as how it relates to the notion of personal identity. We use Jordan Greenhall's framework to describe sovereignty as developing and practicing three basic capacities: perception, sense making and agency. We discuss these capacities in the context of dominant framework of secular thought in the Western world, the crisis of meaning, entrepreneurship, identity politics etc.

Identity politics have become a hot topic in the Western world. People tend to attach their sense of identity to certain political ideas, gender identity, ethnic or religious group, sexual orientation etc, and often get triggered when they perceive their identity is being threatened.

Today we discuss why it is useful and important to detach from these categories in order to develop psychologically. We talk about how to deconstruct your identity and tell the stories of how we have done it.

In This Episode Of Future Thinkers:

  • What it means to deconstruct your identity, and how it enables us to see things more objectively
  • The current narratives of diversity, oppression and globalization as formative forces
  • The relationship between individual expression and narcissistic culture
  • Why it is difficult to stand out in a globalized culture and why we emphasize differences
  • Why people remain attached to ideas even after those ideas are disproved
  • The role of basic human needs when it comes to attachments
  • The different methods for deconstructing identity
  • Getting comfortable with contradiction and letting go of the attachment to results

In this episode we are discussing the concept of "adulting" and why it's relevant today. We also talk about how being an adult will change in the future and what meta-skills one needs to develop in order to adapt to the fast-changing world.

Adulting is an ironic term used by the Millenial generation to describe holding grown up responsibilities like paying the bills or taxes for example, but not feeling like an actual adult while doing that. We discuss why the adult "script" that was handed to us by the previous generations (go to school, get good grades, get a career for life, get married etc) doesn’t seem relevant or even possible for many young people today.

Instead of the specific skills that are taught in schools and tailored for the traditional script of adulthood, we are exploring meta-skills, or the general skills that one can apply to any area of life to learn other skills.

In This Episode of Future Thinkers:

  • Why Millenials don't feel like adults today even if they are technically grown up
  • The differences in going through the stages of life between our parents' and our generation
  • How the increasing social and technological complexity causes anxiety among young people
  • The history and reasons behind the "coddling" style of parenting in 1980s
  • The traits of today's young generations that make them vulnerable to real life challenges
  • How to adapt to the present and future world and increase personal sovereignty
  • Three pillars of cognitive sovereignty
  • The examples of meta-skills that are useful for learning any other skill and adapting to changes

The last two feminine archetypes we are covering in this series are The Witch and The Queen.

The common association with The Witch is a wicked old woman that we see in many movies or stories for children. However, this interpretation has a lot of historical religious bias, which we deconstruct in this episode. We discuss The Witch in her fullest - as a powerful creative force and bringer of disruptive ideas.

We also talk about The Queen Archetype, a fully integrated combination of all the other feminine archetypes that can emerge when the woman matures.

At the end we propose a few exercises that can help you evoke different archetypes in your psyche or better understand other people's behavior.

Understanding the archetypes can help us see our blind spots, refine our strengths, and ultimately bring about deep and profound personal transformation.

So with this episode we are finishing our Jungian archetype series, where we explored four masculine (Lover, Warrior, Magician, King) and five feminine archetypes (Mother, Amazon, Lover, Witch, Queen).

In This Episode Of Future Thinkers:

  • The Witch - the seeker and bringer of deep and secret knowledge
  • Pagan origins of witches
  • Connection with the secret laws of nature, medicine and healing
  • Why the church was afraid of the witches and tortured them
  • Modern manifestations of The Witch archetype in arts, science and technology
  • Examples of women who embody this archetype
  • Childhood manifestations of the Witch archetype
  • The biggest vice of the shadow version of The Witch
  • The Manipulator and The Fool - the active and passive shadows of The Witch

Today we are exploring the feminine archetype of The Lover, which to a certain extent mirrors its masculine counterpart but also has its own specific traits. The feminine Lover is the embodiment of love, beauty and creativity. While researching this topic, we've discovered that it is difficult to talk and write about this archetype, as female sexuality still hasn't been fully reconciled and accepted in post-agricultural society. We are covering the Lover Archetype through history, psychological development, culture, arts and popular media.

In This Episode Of Future Thinkers:

  • Hetaira - the version of the Lover Archetype in ancient Greece
  • Why societies have had problems with female sexuality throughout history
  • Time-biased and role-based descriptions of The Lover archetype in literature
  • The Lover in hippie culture of the 20th century - mythological interpretations
  • The full expression of the Lover Archetype and its benefits for women
  • Connections between sexuality and creativity
  • How The Lover and The Amazon complement each other in the same person
  • Oppression and abuse as common triggers of the Lover's shadow versions
  • Childhood manifestations and the shadow version of Daddy's Girl
  • Femme Fatale as the expression of childhood oppression of sexuality
  • Initiation through acceptance of grief and ways to overcome trauma related to sexuality
  • How men can support the full expression of feminine Lover archetype

The Amazon archetype is the embodiment of an ambitious, adventurous, and independent woman. She is the feminine version of The Warrior archetype, fighting for the values she believes in. This is a very common archetype in movies - Wonder Woman, Hermione Granger in Harry Potter, and Ripley in Alien are some of the many examples. In everyday life, many women in business, politics, and sports occupy this archetype.

As all the other archetypes, The Amazon too has its childhood and adult manifestations, as well as active and passive shadow versions. In this episode we discuss why The Amazon is so relevant in today's world.

In This Episode Of Future Thinkers

  • Why The Amazon Archetype is so prevalent in popular culture and media
  • The most recognizable traits of The Amazon
  • The seeds of The Amazon in the Explorer Child
  • Miss Know-It-All and the active shadow of The Amazon in childhood
  • The Pushover and how the shadow polarities often play off of each other
  • Why professions dominated by men often attract The Amazon
  • How The Amazon manifests in activism - the positive and shadow versions
  • The aggressive Vigilante as the active shadow in an adult Amazon
  • The Victim - the Amazon's shadow weak side
  • The examples of The Amazon archetype in movies, history, and modern life
  • Overlaps between feminine and masculine archetypes, and how either gender can apply them
  • The progression of feminine archetypes in a person's life

After covering Jungian masculine archetypes in previous four episodes, today we are starting to explore feminine archetypes. Even though there is somewhat less literature and research on this topic, there are certain archetypes that are consistently described across the different systems. So in the second part of this series, we will explore the archetypes of The Mother, The Amazon, The Lover, The Witch, and The Queen.

We begin with The Mother, the characteristics of her full expression and her shadow versions, as well as the examples from popular culture, that will help you better understand and recognize this archetype.

In This Episode Of Future Thinkers:

  • The biological foundations of motherhood that determine the qualities of The Mother archetype
  • The Mother in its fullness as the expression of nurturing, empathy, and complete acceptance
  • Professions that benefit from a strong presence of this archetype
  • Manifestations of The Mothers' energy in children
  • How anyone can use The Mother archetype to increase their wellbeing
  • Helicopter Mother - the most common shadow version in today's society
  • How the Mother archetype shows up in activism
  • How to recognize when you are stepping into the shadow version of The Mother

The King Archetype represents an integrated version of all other masculine archetypes.

The Lover, The Warrior and The Magician in their full expressions, with all positive traits solidified, are baked into The King. Interestingly enough, the childhood version of this archetype - The Divine Child, is the first one to emerge in a person's life. To fully integrate the mature version of The King archetype, it usually takes many years and a lot of life experience.

In this episode, we give an overview of The King's traits, its shadow versions, as well as how to access it in its fullness regardless of your age or the stage of life you are at.

In This Episode Of Future Thinkers:
- Recognizing the King's traits in children's behavior
- The Divine Child as the embodiment of pure love, joy, and hope for the future
- The Highchair Tyrant — the seeds of narcissism and entitlement
- The Weakling Prince as the passive shadow of The King Archetype
- Integrity, order, decisiveness, and responsibility in the full expression of The King
- The importance of mentoring and giving "blessings" to young men
- The home as the first domain of The King's sovereignty
Productive, creative, protective of others — the important roles of The King
- How being hyper-intellectual and hyper-rational can lead to shadow manifestations of The King
- Different kinds of legacies The King can leave behind
- How to apply and manifest the King's traits in everyday life

The Magician is the third Jungian masculine archetype in this series. The Magician has a deep curiosity for everything in life — he is willing to put in the effort to learn the secret knowledge and teach it to the others. He uncovers things that are not immediately obvious, understands how they work and applies that knowledge to creating something new. So, in relation to The Warrior, for example, The Magician is the creative force and the thinker who drives the actions of The Warrior.

In this episode, we talk about the full expression of The Magician archetype, the well-known magician characters from popular fiction, as well as the examples of magicians in our culture and science. We also talk about its shadow versions, and how to recognize them in business or within your community.

In This Episode Of Future Thinkers:

  • The Magician Archetype in its esoteric and mundane context
  • The common trait of magicians — putting in an extraordinary effort to learn hidden knowledge
  • The willingness to share knowledge and give secret information to the people
  • Why there is such lack of mentorship and apprenticeship in this age
  • The path of learning secret knowledge in the past and the importance of initiation
  • Shamanism as an expression of The Magician Archetype and the stigma surrounding this practice
  • Recognizing the shadow versions of The Magician in pickup artists, marketing gurus, manipulators, or cult leaders
  • The Detached Manipulator and The Innocent One — the dark sides of The Magician
  • Why holding secret knowledge comes with difficulties and great responsibility
  • Examples of The Magician Archetype in arts, technology, science and popular culture
  • How to access this archetype in your own self-development practice
  • Rediscovering the sacred space in your everyday life

Archetypes can be defined as the primordial modes of being, sets of behavior, or energies that we as humans occupy on both biological and psychological levels. Archetypes were largely explored and described by psychiatrist Carl Jung.

The second Jungian masculine archetype we are covering in this series is The Warrior. It is the most misunderstood archetype in our culture, often connected with unnecessary violence and tyranny. However, in its full expression, The Warrior is needed in order to bring about productive change in the world. We discuss  how this archetype manifests in its childhood and mature versions, and talk about its characteristics and some well known versions of it like The Bully, The Hero, The Sadist, The Nice Guy etc.

"A man who is obsessed with his success has already lost."

In This Episode Of Future Thinkers:

  • Characteristics of The Warrior archetype
  • Aggression as the positive trait — making effort to succeed, being assertive, and having initiative
  • Shadow version of The Warrior in childhood — The Bully
  • How The Hero manifests in childhood and adulthood
  • The suppressed aggression in a Nice Guy
  • Why today's society sees no need for aggression and actively discourages it
  • The Warrior as a force of creative destruction
  • The highest traits of this archetype — discipline, focus, open awareness, adaptability, humility
  • The Sadist and The Masochist as dysfunctional polarities of The Warrior
  • Examples of warriors from popular films and culture
  • How to integrate this archetype in a pro-social and productive way

To explore this topic, we start with the idea that for 99% of history, humans were hunters-gatherers and evolved to live a very different lifestyle — spending time outdoors and tightly connected to their communities. Now that we live indoors, sitting in front of a computer, not socializing or exercising sufficiently, eating processed food, our modern lifestyle is not in line with our nature, and that is the major factor of the present epidemic of depression.

IN THIS EPISODE OF FUTURE THINKERS:

- Evoking the life of our ancestors to learn more about our modern life
- Invisible stress factors from our environment that contribute to depression
- Media consumption as an important influence factor for feeling helpless and depressed
- Training ourselves to pinpoint the exact cause of our distress
- Increasing self-sovereignty as an important tool for overcoming depression
- 6 simple steps to alleviate depression symptoms
- The importance of daily routines and habits to shift your state

Today we talk about the value of novelty as one of the basic human needs. A sense of novelty is something that many people seek out and use different tools to achieve. Going back thousands of years, psychedelics or meditation were used to achieve novel states of consciousness, and these tools can still be used today.

We discuss how to induce the state where everything feels new as if seen through the eyes of a child. We talk about the language and conceptual overlays that stand between ordinary consciousness and the state of being immersed in the raw experience of the world.

IN THIS EPISODE OF FUTURE THINKERS:

- How we use language to fit all of our experiences into existing conceptual frameworks
- Why the state of uncertainty makes us uncomfortable
- Why stability is useful and why we need to make sense of the world
- The utility of being in a state of newness
- Novelty as alchemy — how to make that experience part of everyday life
- How meditation helps us get into the state of openness
- Using psychedelics as a tool to remove the analytical overlay and use our primary senses
- What would global society look like if we would collectively tap into our raw perception
- Why being able to exist in the state of uncertainty makes you more adaptive
